The full schedule of services with readings is prepared four or five times a year for the seasons of the church's liturgical year. The most recent schedule is available here as a pdf document.
There are two services on any given ordinary Sunday.
The earlier service each Sunday is usually a simple service of Holy Communion without music using the 1962 form of the service from the Book of Alternative Services. The readings for this service are the same as for the later service.
The later service varies through the month:
1st Sunday - Eucharist (BAS 1962)
2nd Sunday - Eucharist (BAS)
3rd Sunday - Morning Prayer and Anointing
4th Sunday - Eucharist (BAS)
5th Sunday - Eucharist (BAS)
Services and service times may occasionally change, especially during the summer months or in response to liturgical seasons. Please be sure to confirm services and times on our notices page or on our blog. Thank you.
The service of Holy Communion at the later service is sung service (except in the summer months, mid-June through the Sunday of Labour Day). We use one of two different musical settings of the mass: indicated above as Merbecke and Schubert Deutsche Messe.
John Merbecke (c.1505-c.1585) based his setting on traditional Latin plainsong and adapted it to the English texts of the then new Prayer Book. It was published in 1550. The organ accompaniment used at Saint Mary's was arranged by Healey Willan (1880-1968).
Franz Schubert (1797-1828) wrote five settings of the mass. His Mass in F major, D872 (Deutsche Messe, German Mass) was written in 1826. The edition used at Saint Mary's is a 1985 adaptation to ICET (English) texts by Richard Proulx. In his foreword to the edition, Proulx describes it as "essentially congregational music, [...] participatory music of the finest kind. Although technically easy, this music is unmistakably Schubert's (mature music composed just two years before his death) and displays the melodic grace we associate with his [...] songs."
Saint Mary's extends a standing invitation and a warm welcome to all visitors and newcomers to join us in Wrixon Hall after the later Sunday service for coffee and fellowship (in the summer: juice in the quadrangle).
There are services of Morning Prayer and Holy Communion through the week with a service of Healing taking place once a month.
