Prayer Support Group

Prayer Support Group — supports parish and parishioners in prayer. Confidential. Barb Mann.

The Lord taught is to pray, not only in words, but also in actions. —St. Cyprian of Carthage

If you have a request or concern, we will be pleased to pray for you. Our purpose is to support the parish and each other in prayer. We will need a name, and the need, request, or thanksgiving. This is a confidential list. Each week we will review the prayer list and revise it. Please call me.

Barb Mann

Prayer Corner

The Prayer Corner is open every Sunday after the 10:30 a.m. service for those who need to take a moment of quiet prayer. While prayer and meditative material is available there will be no one to assist in prayer through the Spring and Summer months. St. Mary’s Prayer Support Team expects to be able to provide such assistance again beginning in September. The Prayer Support Team will remain active through this time. If you have need of prayer on behalf of yourself or someone else, please bring that need to my attention in confidence.

Barb Mann

Welcome Table

The Welcome Table is a place of information for those new to our community. It is located outside the church office door. If you meet someone new please give them one of our welcome bags and introduce them to one of the staff. Every parishioner is a vital part of this ministry.

Ruthanne Ward

Prayers of the People

You might notice that the Health and Wellness prayer list has been pruned. Our practice from now on will be to keep requested names on the list for one month. Please feel free to resubmit names as necessary. If the name can be removed sooner, please advise the office.

Jordan Wellington has become an integral part of the ministry team. As part of his formation as a postulant for the diocese of Toronto he will be working as part of the team at Trinity, Aurora. His last Sunday at St. Mary’s will be September 12. We pray God’s blessing on his continued ministry.

Our parish deacon, the Rev. Derek Davidson is retiring from his ministry at St. Mary’s. His last Sunday with us will be September 19 at which time we will celebrate and give thanks for his ministry and pray for God’s continued blessing upon him. If you would like to contribute to a parish gift for Derek, please place it on the offering plate give it to Rick Sulker. Envelopes are available.

Food Bank

Our next food bank collection day is Sunday, September 12. As with other activities here, there seems to be a tendency for food bank donations to drop off in the summer. Just a reminder that demand does not, and the food bank is coping with increased numbers nowadays. When I dropped off last Sunday’s collection I asked what the current need was. It’s canned fruit, juice, and cereal. Canadian Tire money is also appreciated. The Richmond Hill Community Food Bank asks me to pass on their thanks.

The food bank is located at 55 Newkirk Road in Richmond Hill, telephone 905-508-4761. Hours of operation are Monday–Friday, 9:00–11:30 a.m.

Next Sunday

On Sunday, September 12 we celebrate Gear Up Sunday/St. Mary the Virgin with services of Holy Communion at 8:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m., the Rev. Mark Kinghan presiding, the Rev. Ruthanne Ward preaching. Year C, Proper 23, Proper for St. Mary, BAS p. 419. The readings appointed for this Sunday are: Isaiah 7:10-15; Psalm 132:6-10, 13-14; Galatians 4:4-7; and Luke 1:46-55.

Worship Schedule

The regular monthly schedule of 10:30 a.m. worship services at Saint Mary’s is:

1st Sunday - Eucharist (BAS 1962)
2nd Sunday - Eucharist (BAS)
3rd Sunday - Morning Prayer and Anointing
4th Sunday - Eucharist (BAS)
5th Sunday - Eucharist (BAS)

Communion and Health

A reminder that we are asked not to dip the wafer (intinction) into the wine at communion. Intinction is unhealthy: it transmits germs on the fingers. It is acceptable and valid to receive the sacrament of the Eucharist in one kind, bread only, and to place one’s hand on the chalice as it is offered to you, without drinking. Thank you for keeping to this rule.

Mark Kinghan

Back to Church Sunday

This year’s Back to Church Sunday is September 26. The bishops of the diocese have asked all parishes to enthusiastically participate in this ministry of evangelism. On Sunday, September 12, each person will receive an invitation which they are in turn to pass on to someone they would like to invite to church on September 26. I encourage you to start thinking now about who you’d like to invite.

Mark Kinghan

Dominican School Mission

Thank you for your prayers and support over the past few weeks. I am home safely from a successful trip to Barahona, Dominican Repuplic. This year I did double duty—on construction and at the VBS and it was wonderful working with the children. I will have photos and my story for presentation sometime in late September or early October.

Any Old Iron!?*

Last call this year. As ‘back to school’ is upon us and knowing that Windows 7 is making obsolete another swath of hardware that would run just fine under something else, I’m again putting it out that we’ll accept donations of old computers**. We know there’s a demand—we gave away four to our Christmas Families last year—and we know how to refurbish them. And if anything comes in that betters what staff already have so much the better. Thank you to the three or four people who have already responded.

John Martin, for Outreach

* ‘Any old iron?’, traditional rag-and-bone man call. ‘Iron’, IT jargon for computer hardware.

** St. Mary’s wipes donated computers using techniques recommended by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Technical Security Standards for Information Technology in Appendix Ops-II: Media Sanitation. Your data are guaranteed irrecoverably erased—we get to reuse the drive. —jm

Sign Changer Wanted

Must be young, warm blooded or own decent parka, sure footed, and creative with English—we don’t always have the letters we need. Twenty minutes now and again, more often around major festivals. Apply at the church office.

John Martin—Sign Changer, Retired

St. Mary’s Future Planning

Since early in the year, the leadership of St. Mary’s has been discerning a future plan for the mission and ministry of St. Mary’s. It was shared in its initial form with the parish in February and received support and encouragement. Now, further details and priorities to accomplish our goals have been filled in. Please take the time to read the document that will be distributed at the end of the service; talk to member of the committee about your questions, concerns or issues; ask yourself where and how you fit it. There is a place for everyone! We need everyone’s support, involvement and prayers!

Trevor Kimpton

Policy on Announcements

Whenever possible announcements should go in the bulletin and should arrive at the church office preferably by e-mail by midday of the Wednesday before the Sunday on which they are to appear. When announcements miss the bulletin or require amplification, they may be made at announcement time provided they meet the Worship Committee’s guidelines: with notice to and permission from the Incumbent the previous Friday, thirty (30) seconds, three (3) sentences maximum, to include only what, when, where, and whom to contact.

Battery Disposal Program

A reminder that you can bring used batteries to St. Mary’s for safe disposal. Look for the beige container in the narthex.

Proportionate Giving Worksheet

An electronic spreadsheet version of the Proportionate Giving Worksheet printed in the current issue of The Message, Vol.17, No.3, is available on this web site as proportionategiving.xls (Microsoft Excel) and as proportionategiving.ods (OpenOffice 2.0).

This worksheet tested virus-free with McAfee VirusScan using virus definition file no. 4834, dated August 21, 2006 prior to upload to our server. This worksheet does not send data back to the church or to the church's web server. This worksheet is offered "as is" and is without warranty of any kind. Windows systems may recognize the Open Office file as a Zip file and change its name upon download. This is annoying but not disastrous. Just lop off the extra extension!

Pastoral Visiting

Our Pastoral Visiting Team will bring communion, anointing, or simply visit with anyone who wishes it. Please call—or have someone call for you—if you desire a visit. This ministry continues through the summer months though fewer visitors are available.

Susan Rodgers, Parish Nurse

Hand of Hope is a small non-profit organization founded (and originally funded) by the Anita and Gregory Giagnocavo Family whose goal is to help the rural poor of Guatemala improve their lives. For them, that means, providing medical care and medicine to those who are sick and do not have access to health care. Anita is the sister of one of St. Mary's parishioners.
